How Long Do I Wear Compression Stockings After Spider Vein Treatment?

Are branching, discolored veins on your legs affecting your self-esteem? Spider veins are generally an aesthetic problem, although they can suggest deeper venous issues. Spider vein treatment can close off and fade these problem veins to let you achieve clear skin and restore your confidence. Your team at Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz will develop a treatment plan to get rid of your bothersome spider veins as quickly and effectively as possible.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, discolored veins that can appear on various areas of the body, particularly the legs and face. Spider veins on the legs typically look like twisting or branching veins with a red, blue, or purple color. They are smaller than varicose veins, although many people have both. While spider veins themselves are not a health risk, Dr. Craig Schwartz, “Kansas City’s Vein Guy”, will assess whether they are a symptom of an underlying vein problem. These frustrating veins can make people very self-aware and affect their ability to enjoy life to the fullest.

How are Spider Veins Treated?

The majority of spider veins, especially on the legs, are treated with an injectable treatment method called sclerotherapy. This “gold standard” spider vein treatment is used for all but the smallest veins and is effective in treating stubborn clusters of discolored veins. During sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the vein, where it hardens and collapses the vein walls. Blood flow redirects to healthy veins while the treated one fades away.

Laser treatments may be used for smaller spider veins or in combination with sclerotherapy for spider veins that are too tiny to be injected.  Facial spider veins may also be treated with a special laser treatment called VeinGogh. Only a consultation can determine the best treatment method for you.

How Long Do I Wear Compression Stockings After Spider Vein Treatment?

When you finish your sclerotherapy treatment, you may notice some sensitivity or tingling in the treated area. Bruising will often develop and last up to a few weeks. You will be instructed to avoid soaking in hot water or exposing the treated area to the sun.

People who have spider veins treated on their legs will usually have a compression stocking to wear after treatment. This stocking works by putting pressure on the treated veins, helping them collapse and redirecting blood flow. Wearing these stockings as directed is important to achieving your desired results. Only wear stockings approved by Dr. Schwartz or his team since store-bought ones may not have enough compression to do the job.

Treated patients are required to wear prescription-grade compression stockings (available for purchase at our office) for 4-5 days after each treatment for optimal cosmetic results. Dr. Schwartz will examine your progress during follow-ups and determine when you can stop wearing it.

Am I a Good Candidate for Spider Vein Treatment?

Almost anyone with spider veins can have treatment to get rid of them. Good candidates are healthy adults with reasonable expectations. You may not be a good candidate for some treatments if you have certain medical conditions or are not able to walk regularly. Dr. Schwartz will develop your treatment plan based on your needs and whether you have underlying venous conditions such as varicose veins.

How Many Spider Vein Treatments Will I Need?

Most people will need a series of treatments to address spider veins, especially if they are large or in clusters. Many people will see their desired results after three to five sessions, while others may need more, and some may only require a single session if the spider veins are in a small area. While you may have several clusters of spider veins treated in one session, you will usually need several appointments to fade them completely.

How Long Do Spider Veins Take to Fade After Treatment?

After sclerotherapy has closed off your spider veins, your body’s lymphatic system will gradually remove the remnants of the veins and their pigments. This process takes time, so you can expect to wait several days to weeks before starting to see a significant improvement in your spider veins. Larger spider veins or clusters can take up to a few months to disappear completely. Dr. Schwartz will assess your progress throughout treatment and determine when you can expect to see your full results.

Will My Spider Veins Come Back After Treatment?

Treated veins have been permanently removed and will not come back. However, the factors that caused you to develop spider veins may still be present. If you have a genetic predisposition to spider veins, a medical condition that makes them more likely, or lifestyle factors such as long periods of sitting or standing, you may develop new spider veins over time. While you can lower your risk by staying physically active and managing medical conditions, you may not be able to stop all spider veins from forming.
