Medically known as “submental fullness”, more often referred to as “turkey neck”, a double chin can result from a variety of causes, including heredity factors, weight and anatomy. However, it’s not always related to weight gain, and many otherwise healthy individuals who maintain an ideal body weight develop double chins.
As most of us prefer to see a streamlined profile when we look into the mirror, let’s review the outpatient procedure options available to eliminate this pesky unwanted fat that can add years to your face.
“Submental Fullness” is the medical term used to reference the dreaded double chin. Neck aging has always been a top aesthetic concern for both men and women, and many patients begin showing signs of aging in this area – especially the double chin – as early as their 30s. When treating the double-chin area, we have to address both the excess fat as well as the skin laxity. Often, the development of a double chin has absolutely nothing to do with weight gain. It is often either related to the loss of support as the jaw bone continues to reabsorb as we age, or it is directly related to a person’s genetic predisposition to this type of aging pattern to the neck/chin area.
Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz provides outpatient procedures for patients seeking to eliminate their double chin. Although some patients’ anatomy will require a full neck-lift, many patients obtain beautiful results from one or a combination of two of our in-office fat reduction and/or skin tightening procedures. And unlike Kybella injections, the following treatments do not require ongoing maintenance to preserve results.

Liposuction
Inserting a tiny cannula through a tiny incision, this procedure removes fat from beneath the skin and sculpts the contour of the chin and neck. The procedure is performed using local tumescent anesthesia and provides the patient with minimal downtime and fairly immediate results once the swelling subsides. Most patients will require just one procedure, making this a very popular option to eliminate a double chin, as the fat cells will be gone forever.
Renuvion Skin Tightening
Renuvion, formerly known as J-Plasma, is an ideal “add-on” procedure that Dr. Schwartz often uses to address the skin laxity component often present in patients with submental fat. Prior to Renuvion, many patients would have to go under the knife for a full neck lift, as liposuction alone often will not fully address the laxity component of this area. The combination of liposuction and Renuvion skin tightening procedure allows so many patients to avoid full surgery under general anesthesia! Unlike liposuction for the double chin, which is often one and done, skin laxity may progress with aging, and patients may benefit from additional treatments in the future.
The innovative Renuvion procedure combines radiofrequency energy with plasma helium to heat, and subsequently, tighten and contract skin and subcutaneous tissue. Using local tumescent anesthesia, Dr. Craig Schwartz begins the procedure with small incisions that are strategically placed in the chin area. He will then use the Renuvion® device subdermally (beneath the skin) to deliver plasma helium, which will instantly begin to shrink, tighten and firm your tissue and skin from the inside out. Because this is done directly at the level of tissue where we want to see the tightening effect, it allows us to use a much higher level of energy at a much higher temperature, providing a much stronger tightening effect, versus the more historic external treatment devices. This game-changing technology produces early results, which continue to improve over the next several months as new collagen forms.
SculpSure and CoolSculpting Body Contouring
Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz is the only cosmetic medical practice in Kansas City to offer both SculpSure and CoolSculpting body contouring treatments! Each has an attachment that fits snugly to the chin and either freezes or melts the pocket of fat. These treatments are completely non-invasive but often require two, or more, sessions spaced several weeks apart. SculpSure offers an added skin tightening benefit that CoolSculpting does not; therefore, we prefer to use WarmSculpting by SculpSure if the patient chooses the non-surgical route. There may be some subsequent pain/swelling in the treated area(s), and they do not offer the ability for precise contouring to the area, as Liposuction and Renuvion skin tightening offer.
The ideal candidate for a double chin procedure at Premier Vein & Body has mild to moderate excess fat under the chin and jawline area. Prior to the Renuvion treatment, patients that obtained great results were typically younger with great skin tone. The Renuvion skin tightening treatment now allows us to treat a greater range of patients needing help in the chin/neck area. Patients with issues of laxity only may only need a Renuvion treatment and may be able to skip the liposuction all together.
