Lymphedema / Leg Swelling

Is Leg Swelling Keeping You from Living to the Fullest?

Most people might be surprised to learn the lymphatic system is also part of the vascular system along with veins and arteries. The lymphatic system is vital to immunity, carrying fluid and cells to help fight infection anywhere in the body. When a blockage develops, this is called lymphedema, and it can be an uncomfortable condition, with several different causes.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema results from a blockage in your lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. The blockage prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and the fluid buildup leads to swelling.  It’s most commonly caused by the removal or damage to your lymph nodes as part of cancer treatment. However, many people don’t realize that it can often be caused by Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), which is an advanced stage of vein disease that occurs when the inner lining of the veins and/or valves located within one of the larger veins (Greater Saphenous Vein) are not working properly, causing venous blood to collect in the veins.

Lymphedema from CVI symptoms include:

  • Swelling of a limb
  • New varicose veins
  • Tight skin that sometimes bears a tingling sensation
  • The affected limb feels heavier than unaffected limbs
  • Skin appears leathery or thick
  • Stasis ulcers (around the ankles) that won’t heal

What Treatments are Available for Lymphedema Caused by CVI?

The problems associated with CVI, including lymphedema, do not disappear on their own without treatment.  Untreated CVI can lead to serious complications, including CVI, and early diagnosis and treatment by a vascular specialist, such as Dr. Craig Schwartz, is important. Although in the initial stages of Lymphedema the swelling  may subside with elevation and rest, over time and without adequate treatment, the constant strain on the lymphatic system may lead to damage in the lymphatic vessels, including pain, leg ulcers, thickening of the skin and more.

If Dr. Schwartz determines after a thorough visual exam and venous duplex ultrasound that your lymphedema is caused by CVI deep within your venous system, he will recommend an Endovenous Laser Ablation, which will close the damaged vein, re-routing the blood to healthier veins, and restoring your venous and lymphatic health.

What Results Will I See?
