How Do Botox® and Xeomin® Work?
The botulinum toxin in Botox® and Xeomin® works by targeting facial muscles that crease and tug on the skin. When injected, Botox® travels to the facial nerves. It temporarily stops them from releasing a signal called acetylcholine that tells facial muscles to contract. Without these signals, the muscles relax and free the skin from pulling and creasing.
Since the effects of botulinum toxin are temporary and do not harm the facial nerves, Botox® can be used safely for a wide range of medical and aesthetic purposes. Botox® and Xeomin® are the safest and most effective ways to address facial lines and wrinkles caused by muscle movement. Dr. Craig Schwartz provides all Xeomin® injections himself to ensure safe and aesthetically pleasing results.
Why is My Botox® Wearing Off So Fast?
Each person’s body responds differently to Botox® or Xeomin®, and it may last longer for some people than others. Most people will see their initial Botox® results appear within a few days of their injections. Full results develop within seven to ten days. This timeline may vary depending on your response.
While all the brand-name neurotoxins out there (Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, Xeomin, Daxxify) utilize botulinum toxin A, there are some subtle nuances among them when it comes to what else is in the ingredients. For example, the first three brands contain stabilizing proteins, while Daxxify is made with a peptide, and Xeomin has no proteins. It’s why injectors, including Dr. Schwartz, often have a preference.
Most people find that Botox® lasts three to four months. However, your experience may be different. Many patients who have had Botox® regularly for some time may find that their results last longer than usual because their muscles have become accustomed to their relaxed position. Others may remove Botox® unusually quickly and need treatment more often. Most frequently, though, this tends to happen in patients who have been getting the same brand-name neurotoxin containing proteins for years and need to change it up.
Because there are accessory proteins with Botox®, there may be a chance a patient will develop antibodies to the injectable, and this could prevent it from having its desired effect. Because Xeomin® is purified without the extra proteins, there isn’t a chance those additional protein antibodies will form. If your Botox® is wearing off too fast, you may benefit from switching to Xeomin®. This effective treatment lasts longer for many people, and switching to Xeomin® is likely to restore your great results.
What Do Botox® and Xeomin® Treat?
Botox® and Xeomin® treat the following aesthetic concerns:
- Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Vertical lines between the brows (glabellar lines or the 11s)
It is also approved to treat medical conditions such as muscle spasms, migraines, and excessive sweating. While you have other options for treating hyperhidrosis of the underarms, (excessive sweating), Botox® is still used almost anywhere you want to control muscle contractions without causing nerve or muscle damage.
