Has Venous Insufficiency Affected Your Skin’s Ability to Heal?

While our body’s ability to heal can be amazing, it needs a healthy environment to do so. When venous insufficiency causes chronic swelling, inflammation, and pressure, the skin can be affected and develop open wounds, or venous stasis ulcers. At Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz, we have the experience and training to improve your venous insufficiency and resolve the root cause of your venous ulcers.

What are Venous Ulcers?

Elevated pressures in the veins and backflow of blood due to faulty valves from venous insufficiency cause soft tissue swelling and chronic inflammation that can lead to open skin sores. These ulcers can take prolonged time to heal, and when the underlying insufficiency is not addressed, that healing is slowed or halted altogether. Luckily, with Dr. Craig Schwartz, the only triple-board-certified vein specialist in Kansas City, treatments usually result in the rapid improvement of venous ulcers.

What Treatments are Available for Venous Ulcers?

With early detection, compression stockings and wound care may be the only intervention necessary. For complex conditions, it’s important to determine which veins are affected to establish the best treatment options.

During Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), Dr. Schwartz uses the Sciton Pro-V Laser to introduce thermocoagulation (heat) directly to the diseased vein. Through a tiny, insulated laser fiber, the heat is delivered directly to the vein’s lining to seal the vein shut and produce scar tissue. Once the vein is sufficiently blocked, it collapses. The body reabsorbs the vein and redirects blood supply to healthier vessels. Swelling and inflammation are reduced, restoring a healing environment for the ulcer.

What Results Will I See?

An Endovenous Laser Ablation will immediately address the underlying insufficient vein, so medical and cosmetic improvements to the ulcer begin rapidly. While treating venous ulcers can be a lengthy process, the combination of vein treatment and wound care can speed healing time and improve your overall vascular condition.

Is There Any Downtime?

Patients are required to walk around immediately following the procedure and most return to work within the next day or two. Patients are able to resume normal activities while wearing compression stockings for 1-2 weeks to prevent blood clots and produce optimal results.
