Are Veins on Your Face Giving You Anxiety About Your Appearance?

Spider veins on the face, particularly those around the nose and cheeks, can make you feel self-conscious and want to cover up. In truth, they have many contributing causes not everyone is aware of. If you’re suffering from small or large facial veins, Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz has treatment options for you.

What are Facial Veins?

Face veins typically present as spider veins around the nose, mouth, chin, or eyes. Veins near your eyes may also be larger and blue or green in color. These spider veins, also called telangiectasias, result from any of these factors or sometimes from unknown causes

  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Heredity (a primary cause of spider and varicose veins)
  • Medical conditions (scleroderma, lupus, etc)
  • Liver problems
  • Alcohol use
  • Rosacea (especially small, red veins that become more prominent with flushing)

While some of these factors may be avoidable, others, especially hereditary or genetic reasons, cannot be avoided, making prevention and treatment the best options. For people not bothered by visible facial veins, they rarely require treatment and can usually be left alone, although Dr. Schwartz can assess them to make sure they do not stem from an underlying vein issue.

What Treatments are Available for Facial Veins?

Triple-board-certified physician Dr. Craig Schwartz is Kansas City’s most experienced and credentialed vein specialist and has the expertise and knowledge to guide you through your treatment options. While facial veins usually cause only cosmetic issues, an assessment by a triple board-certified vein doctor like Dr. Schwartz can uncover and treat any related venous problems. Sclerotherapy, the injection of an FDA-approved solution to scar and close the veins, can work well on spider veins, but, generally, is not the first treatment of choice if they are located in the facial area. For these, Dr. Schwartz often recommends topical or superficial lasers,or devices such as VeinGogh that can treat small spider veins without ever penetrating the skin.

Dr. Schwartz uses the Vein Gogh device, as well as multiple other laser options, including the Dornier 940 Diode and 1064 Nd-Yag to provide a superior solution for the treatment of all of the even finest spider veins across the face and nose. Many of these veins are too tiny to be treated with sclerotherapy injections or standard laser treatments, which are, generally, both better suited to treat larger spider veins. VeinGogh delivers outstanding results using proprietary Microburst Technology™, which creates effective, controllable heating of dermal vasculature, without significant discomfort or damage to the surrounding tissue.

Although Dr. Schwartz prefers the VeinGogh for facial vein treatment, he will customize your treatment plan to address your individual needs, and he has a variety of lasers and other techniques available to work with.

What Results Will I See With Facial Vein Treatment?

Results can usually be seen immediately following your treatment, with continued noticeable improvements for several days to weeks as the treated veins are naturally absorbed by your body. Although the VeinGogh and the other laser procedures will reduce the treated veins, it is possible for new veins to form in time. Most patients require just 1-2 treatments for their facial veins, and sometimes a single treatment may clear them, although this depends on the number of spider veins, their size, and their response to treatment. Dr. Schwartz will be able to assess your needs and review your treatment plan during your vein screening.

Hereditary spider veins can possibly appear again in the future, although visible veins caused by another condition will often recur if the condition does not receive treatment. Some conditions, such as rosacea, cause chronic symptoms that patients manage on an ongoing basis. Conditions like scleroderma and lupus also cause chronic medical issues, with facial veins representing a small, but often emotionally and psychologically important aspect.

Is There Any Downtime With Facial Vein Treatment?

You won’t experience bruising, scarring or pigmentation as with other alternative laser treatments offered by some med spas. Vein specialists like Dr. Schwartz are better equipped to handle facial veins than a med spa or other non-specialist facilities. Some patients with sensitive skin may notice temporary redness for approximately 1-2 weeks post-procedure.  This truly is a lunchtime procedure, as patients can resume normal activity with zero downtime.

If you have another medical condition causing the visible facial veins, your recovery time may depend on the treatment for the underlying condition. Dr. Schwartz can treat most underlying venous diseases with minimally invasive, in-office procedures requiring minimal to no downtime or discomfort.
