Certification and Skill
Legally, any doctor can perform an in-office liposuction procedure, including ER doctors, primary care physicians and more! However, you wouldn’t want just any doctor without the proper experience and training to handle your liposuction surgery. Therefore, make sure you choose a surgeon who is board-certified and completed three to five years of training in surgery, with an eye for detail, which is a must for cosmetic surgery!
Type of Liposuction Procedure
Although the skill of each individual surgeon will always be the most important consideration when choosing a provider, it’s very important to note that along with the growth of popularity of the liposuction procedure, the options available with the various “types” of liposuction offered to continue to expand, and should be a consideration when making your final choice. Many plastic surgeons still perform “traditional liposuction” under general anesthesia in a hospital or surgery center. Because it is performed under general anesthesia, this is often the best option for patients seeking the greatest volume of fat removal, although it’s worth noting that this procedure involves the most amount of pain, downtime, bruising and recovery time.
However, in the last 10-15 years less invasive liposuction techniques using laser, ultrasound or vibration energy to first melt the fat prior to suctioning have revolutionized the field of liposuction. Laser Lipo, Vaser Lipo, Smart Lipo, Tickle Lipo and different types of in-office liposuction that are performed using local tumescent anesthesia, offering patients less downtime and pain, less swelling (which means more noticeable results sooner), better skin tightening benefits and less expensive (because general anesthesia is not used, treatments can be performed in-office instead of hospitals or surgery centers, greatly reducing the costs involved).
It’s important to remember that many plastic and cosmetic surgeons offer you just one type – even if it’s not the best type of liposuction for your fat reduction goals. Dr. Craig Schwartz offers several types of in-office liposuction, ensuring the best possible cosmetic outcome for your fat reduction goals!
