What to Do for Varicose Veins?

Bulging and visible leg veins are more than a cosmetic issue. These varicose veins can be a sign of underlying venous issues that require treatment. Fortunately, Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz specializes in treating varicose veins, restoring your healthy leg circulation and giving you aesthetically pleasing results. Dr. Craig Schwartz, “Kansas City’s Vein Guy”, will develop a customized treatment plan to address your problem veins and provide relief.

What are Varicose Veins?

While you may not think about it, the veins in your legs are under tremendous pressure at all times. Veins carry blood back to the heart, so the veins in your legs must work against gravity to transport blood all the way up from the feet. Since blood would otherwise flow back down, these veins have valves that prevent backflow. Damage to these valves allows the veins to bulge and stretch, creating varicose veins. These damaged veins will not return to normal on their own but respond well to treatment.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are caused by pressure that causes the vein walls to stretch, sometimes making the pigments visible through the skin. Many factors can contribute to the development of varicose veins, including

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Extensive sitting or standing
  • Medical conditions

Varicose veins generally indicate a problem with the Great Saphenous Vein, the longest vein in the leg. This vein is prone to backflow and damaged valves, letting blood back up into the surrounding veins. Treatment of varicose veins often requires treating this large, dysfunctional vein to restore normal blood flow. After treating this vein, Dr. Schwartz will address the surrounding “feeder” veins that flow into it.

What to Do for Varicose Veins

Dr. Schwartz will determine the best way to treat your varicose veins, often using a combination of methods. In many cases, one treatment addresses the damaged Great Saphenous Vein, while others treat the associated varicose veins to improve your comfort and aesthetic results. This combined method ensures lasting relief and restores healthy blood flow to treat symptoms like swelling, aching, and discomfort.

Conservative Treatment

Some people will achieve relief with compression garments and lifestyle changes that improve blood flow through the legs. While these are temporary methods that do not correct the underlying problem, many insurance companies will require a trial of conservative management before covering more definitive treatments.

Endovenous Laser Ablation

This treatment is the primary method for treating venous insufficiency caused by a damaged greater saphenous vein.  A thin fiber is inserted into the problem vein, where it uses pulses of laser energy to damage and collapse the vein walls. Your body can adjust and reroute the blood flow, then gradually absorb the treated vein over time.

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins, especially those beneath the surface, may be treated with this injectable method. The sclerosing solution is injected into the problem veins, where it irritates the walls and causes the veins to collapse. This treatment effectively manages many of the “feeder” veins that flow into the primary problem vein.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

The visible bulging varicose veins can be removed with this treatment. It uses tiny hooks inserted through freckle-sized incisions to pull out the unwelcome vein physically. This treatment has the advantage of providing immediate visual improvements. It is often used in combination with other treatments.

Is There Any Downtime After Varicose Vein Treatment?

Varicose vein treatments are minimally invasive and usually require little to no downtime. You can generally resume your normal activities immediately. Regular walking is recommended, and you will often have a compression garment to wear. Depending on the treatment, your team may recommend:

  • Avoiding hot baths or hot tubs
  • Limiting sun exposure to the treated area
  • Not taking NSAIDs such as aspirin or ibuprofen
  • Avoiding the use of harsh or irritating products in the area

You can expect to return to your daily routine without recovery time after your treatment. Your team may provide different recovery instructions depending on your treatment, so follow the individualized guidelines.

How Soon Will I See Results After Varicose Vein Treatment?

Varicose vein treatments may provide quick results, but you will usually need patience to see your full benefits. Treated veins collapse and are absorbed by the body over a period of weeks to months, although blood flow redirects almost immediately. Your visible veins will start to fade after a few weeks, and symptoms will improve within this time.

Will My Varicose Veins Come Back?

Treating the damaged Great Saphenous Vein usually prevents varicose veins from recurring. However, you can still develop new ones, especially if you have multiple risk factors. Lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity can decrease the risk of developing new venous problems over time.
