What is Acne?

Acne comes in many forms. This common skin condition can cause everything from blackheads to large, painful cysts. Acne usually occurs when the sebaceous glands overproduce an oily substance called sebum. This sebum can combine with dead skin cells and bacteria to clog your pores. Bacteria may grow in these clogged pores, creating inflammation. Acne ranges from mild to severe. It can cause several types of scars and may also trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, an uneven skin tone resulting from inflammation in the skin.

Types of Acne

Acne is often categorized as inflammatory or non-inflammatory acne. This difference matters because non-inflammatory acne does not become painful or swollen and does not usually leave scars. Many people have a combination of the two, or the balance may shift due to hormones and other factors.

Non-Inflammatory Acne

Non-inflammatory acne includes blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads develop when a pore becomes clogged but remains open to the air. Contact with oxygen oxidizes the contents of the pore, making it darken. If the pore becomes closed off from the air, the contents remain white or flesh-colored.

Inflammatory Acne

Inflammatory acne includes:

  • Papules – small bumps that feel solid, raised, and tender
  • Pimples – bumps containing pus and surrounded by inflammation
  • Nodules – larger, hard, painful bumps deep under the skin
  • Cysts –  large, painful bumps that fill with pus and may feel soft

Attempting to treat these blemishes by squeezing or puncturing them will not decrease the inflammation. Instead, it will spread bacteria and contamination under the skin, making the affected area bigger and angrier. Nodules and cysts can result in deep acne that is physically and emotionally uncomfortable. Treatment can give you long-lasting relief and protect your skin from future damage.

What is the Best Treatment for Acne?

Many people with acne try topical treatments and prescription medications, but these often fail to control acne. If your at-home methods are not working or cause side effects, Premier Vein & Body has other options.

Tixel®

Tixel® is a unique skin-rejuvenating treatment that uses Thermo-Mechanical Action (TMA®). It uses a grid of tiny titanium pyramids that transfer energy to your skin, creating channels that trigger a healing response. The energy from Tixel® also causes sebaceous glands to stop over-producing sebum.

Carbon Laser Peel

This brightening, clarifying treatment removes dirt, debris, and contaminants. It is so gentle and effective that it has become known as the Hollywood Carbon Peel. It begins with a carbon cream applied to your skin. The carbon pulls oil, dead skin cells, and other debris out of your skin. The laser heats the carbon, triggering new collagen development and leaving the skin fresh and clear.

How Does Tixel® Work for Acne?

Tixel® uses thermal energy that targets and damages the sebaceous glands. These glands stop or greatly reduce sebum production, eliminating the primary cause of your acne. The resurfacing action eliminates the layers of dead skin cells that can become stuck in your pores. It also triggers collagen production, which can improve the appearance of acne scars.

How Does a Carbon Laser Peel Work for Acne?

The Carbon Laser Peel is especially effective for oily, acne-prone skin. Carbon is a popular ingredient in skin-clearing products due to its ability to absorb toxins, contaminants, and excess sebum. This peel takes these benefits to a new level by using a laser to fully activate the treatment, leaving your skin clearer and brighter.

Do I Need Tixel® or a Carbon Laser Peel for My Acne?

Your Premier Vein & Body team often recommends combining these treatments for maximum results. Tixel® makes an excellent tool for decreasing oil production and resurfacing your skin. Carbon Laser Peels are gentle enough to have every few weeks, so you can have one as often as necessary to keep your skin clear and smooth. Each person’s treatment plan will differ depending on what they need to keep their acne under control.

Am I a Candidate for Tixel® or a Carbon Laser Peel for Acne?

Almost anyone makes a good candidate for these two acne treatments. They are safe for all skin types and tones and are especially suited to oily and acne-prone skin. Ideal candidates want to reduce or eliminate acne breakouts with lasting results. Each person will respond differently to treatment, so we may adjust your treatment plan to suit your skin.
