Recovering From Varicose Vein Treatment

If you are diagnosed with vein disease in our vein treatment center, Dr. Craig Schwartz will formulate a personalized treatment plan specific to your diagnosis. All vein treatment procedures are minimally invasive and are performed in the office, under local anesthesia, with an almost immediate return to day-to-day activity. For most patients, you may resume work and normal routine activities within 36 hours, or less, although full recovery may take  up to several weeks.

Once you’ve returned home after the outpatient procedure, Dr. Schwartz will recommend that you rest for the remainder of the day as the anesthetic wears off. Your leg may experience mild discomfort, but the pain shouldn’t be severe, and can be easily managed with an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen, or Motrin. After surgery, the dressings must remain on for 24 to 36  hours, and you should expect minimal to no bleeding. You can shower once the post-op dressing comes off (as long as the water is not too hot), but do not take baths or swim in public pools until the surgical wounds have completely healed.

Though you may return to normal activities, there may be some discomfort and bruising along the vein, which typically  resolves in 1-2 weeks. Exercising can be resumed slowly in 7 days. You should also avoid heavy lifting (anything over 20 lbs) so as not to stress and reopen the vein. Varicose vein treatment contracts the vein, so you may feel tightness or pulling along the vein and mild inflammation is common. Any side effects will continue to diminish over the next several weeks to months. This is considered a chronic and progressive disease, and you should make annual follow up appointments.

Benefits of Varicose Vein Treatment

Upon completion of varicose vein treatment, patients will receive some fairly immediate relief, with noticeable improvement in their pre-treatment symptoms, such as the swelling, pain, heaviness, cramping and discomfort. There will also be immediate, noticeable cosmetic improvements, as the dilated, bulging veins will be gone, which thrills most patients! However, you do need to keep in mind that full recovery will slowly progress over weeks, if not months.

* Initial free vein screening will include a visual evaluation and subsequent discussion with Dr. Schwartz.  However, if patient presents with symptoms of more significant underlying vein disease (not just spider veins), a diagnostic test, such as a venous ultrasound/duplex examination, that is considered medically necessary per the physician’s determination, will be billed as a separate charge, and $450 will be billed to your insurance provider.  Pending your carrier’s response, you may be ultimately responsible for some portion or ALL of this charge, which may include deductibles, co-insurance and/or co-pays. If your insurance company denies this charge, your patient responsibility portion may be partially discounted if you proceed with vein disease treatment through our office.
