How to Choose a Vein Clinic in Kansas City

Do you have some less-than-attractive varicose veins or spider veins that you’d like to have removed? Do you have painful leg veins that make your legs feel like they’re made of concrete after a long day? Choosing a physician to treat your vein condition is not always an easy decision. I always tell my patients that it’s important to educate yourself about your particular vein condition, the potential treatment options available, and things you should know when choosing a vein clinic for treatment.

Following are some tips that I provide to patients when they come to my Kansas City vein clinic for a free consultation:

1. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions
When discussing potential treatment options with your physician, don’t be afraid to ask any and all questions you may have. There are no stupid questions. If you are afraid to ask questions than the doctor at that particular Kansas City vein clinic is likely not for you. Like any relationship, it’s important to be comfortable on a personal level with the physician you choose to conduct your vein procedure.

2. Understand What the Vein Procedure Can and Can’t Do
I always do my best to make sure that any potential patient of mine considering any vein procedure understands what the treatment is all about. I always show before and after photos so patients get a better understanding of the end result. It’s extremely important to make sure your Kansas City vein clinic does not “over promise” on the treatment results.

3. Understand the Costs Associated With Any Vein Procedure
Make sure to check that the Kansas City vein clinic accepts your insurance plan, and whether or not your health insurance will cover your procedure. For example, some vein procedures such as removing spider veins are considered cosmetic, and not medically necessary, and so are not covered. If you don’t ask, you may be stuck having to pay  a bill that you were not aware of.

4. Not All Kansas City Vein Clinics Have the Same Expertise
It’s important to choose a clinic that has a board-certified physician with years of experience in treating many types of vein problems. One way to check is to ask how many years the physician has been  specifically treating venous disease, and to ask if the physician is a board-certified Vascular Surgeon, or is board-certified by The American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM), formerly known as the American Board of Phlebology.

5. Know That You Are Not Alone
Finally, it’s important to know that you are not alone — vein problems such as varicose veins and spider veins are common in both women and men. It is estimated that up to 55 percent of women and 45 percent of men in the United States suffer from some form of vein problem.  It’s likely that a friend or an acquaintance has undergone a similar procedure. Ask around town to learn more about people’s personal experiences.
