How Quickly Does miraDry Work for Underarm Sweat?

miraDry is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment that targets and destroys sweat glands in the underarms to curb excessive sweating and end armpit stains in your clothes.

miraDry – How Does It Work?

Electromagnetic (microwave) energy in the handheld device (“wand”) heats up the water in the sweat and odor glands, causing damage to those glands. Destroyed sweat glands do not regenerate so the results are lasting (average 82% reduction in underarm sweat from one treatment)! The procedure is relatively painless, but it does require local anesthesia in the form of lidocaine injections. Most people can continue normal activities, return to work right after the procedure and resume exercise within a day or two, although many do take the rest of the day off from work, as patients must be able to apply cold compresses or ice packs off and on throughout the first 24 hours.

What are the Side Effects of miraDry?

miraDry is a very safe treatment without any major side effects to the vessels, nerves or lymph nodes in the treated area. And because only 2 percent of your total sweat glands are located in the armpit area, there are still plenty of glands throughout the rest of your body to keep you cool. Minor temporary side effects include swelling, discomfort, and bruising, which typically resolve within a few days to a week or so, as well as small lumps or bumps, which slowly disappear over one to three weeks. The only other side effect is often a welcome one – the reduction of underarm hair! And unlike lasers that can only target very dark hair or those with light skin, miraDry doesn’t discriminate, so all patients will see a reduction in underarm hair.

How Quickly Does miraDry Work?

miraDry results are relatively quick and effective in the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweat), with patients seeing a reduction in sweat as soon as the next day. Although most patients require just one treatment to see (or smell!) instant relief from underarm sweat and odor, the best long-term results – especially for patients suffering from true hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating) are seen with two treatments spaced 2-3 months apart. Less than 10-15% of patients end up requesting this second treatment.
