While dilated hand veins are usually healthy, some find them concerning, or just plain ugly. In most cases, the issue is cosmetic, but in rare cases, bulging hand veins may signify an underlying medical condition. Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz can help you determine your hand vein health and if treatment is something to pursue.

Prominent hand veins are common and have a variety of causes. The source of most vein prominence is age. As we clock the years, our skin thins and loses elasticity, as well as soft tissue volume. Low body fat can also make veins more noticeable. Exercise elevates blood pressure, pushing the veins to the surface. Some are genetically disposed to prominent veins. Because the skin on the hands is thinner than most other places on the body, bulging or raised veins become more noticeable in this area. In addition, our hands are almost always visible to others, making these unsightly veins harder for many people to tolerate.
Dr. Craig Schwartz treats hand veins in various ways, depending on your goals. Since hand veins are usually just a cosmetic problem, treatment focuses on decreasing the appearance of the veins or removing them completely. Insurance will typically not cover hand vein treatment unless this involves an underlying health issue. If your prominent hand veins result from underlying vein disease, they should respond to treatment of the underlying condition, and Dr. Schwartz can use other methods to treat those that remain.
Sclerotherapy is the gold standard in the treatment of spider veins and is one of the easiest treatments, involving a sclerosing agent injected into the veins to develop scarring, which closes the veins and reroutes blood to deeper vessels.
FDA-approved sclerosing agents work quickly and effectively to close most treated veins, although some will require multiple treatments or another treatment.
Laser Vein Treatment is often used in conjunction with one of the other treatments to remove the finest of spider veins that are too tiny for sclerotherapy. Dr. Schwartz uses the TVS 1470nm laser, which uses a small fiber inserted into the vein to transmit heat energy and damage the vein walls to collapse it. He also uses the VeinGogh or Dornier Flexipulse™ to treat small spider veins under the surface of the skin. A combination of laser vein treatment and sclerotherapy will often produce better results than either treatment alone.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy is useful for the removal of larger, bulging veins. Using a tiny incision, a specialized instrument hooks the problematic veins, removing them entirely with the incision healing completely, not even requiring stitches!
Fillers have become a very popular alternative to rejuvenate hands that are showing their age with bulging veins and volume loss. Using synthetic dermal fillers for short-term results, Dr. Schwartz is able to reverse the signs of aging by increasing volume and decreasing the noticeable signs of aging, including bulging veins. Synthetic dermal fillers will last for several months to a year or more, depending on the type of filler used. Dr. Schwartz will choose the dermal filler that will provide the most desirable appearance as well as lasting as long as possible.
For longer-lasting results than synthetic dermal fillers, some people may receive Forever Filler, otherwise known as Autologous Fat Transfer. This lets Dr. Schwartz harvest small volumes of your own fat and inject it into your hands. By filling in areas of volume loss, this fat diminishes the appearance of raised, unsightly veins and makes the hands look younger. Unlike synthetic dermal fillers, this fat will settle into the area and at least some of it will become established and can last for many years.
Though exact results will depend upon the treatment you receive, most patients can expect to see a notable improvement or complete resolution in the appearance of their varicose veins. Early varicose vein treatment can also help prevent the progression of venous disease.
Most people seeking treatment for prominent hand veins typically have concerns about their appearance, and these treatments can achieve that result, although it may require more than one session or even more than one treatment. Since much of the visibility of hand veins comes from the loss of volume, dermal fillers offer an option not available for most other vein concerns.
Your team will discuss your post-treatment care plan with you prior to your procedure, but most of our treatments require little to no downtime. Dr. Schwartz may recommend refraining from exercise for 24 hours. He will usually encourage you to resume your usual routine right away in order to promote blood flow. All of these treatments are minimally invasive and do not require any healing time.
