If you’re one of the millions of people who experience symptoms from varicose veins or spider veins, including pain, itching, swelling, heaviness in the legs, or discoloration – or you just don’t like how they look – now is the perfect time to start your vein treatment.  Winter is one of the most popular times of the year for patients to undergo vein treatment to allow plenty of time to heal (and ditch the compression stockings!) before the warm summer months of shorts and swimsuits!

Dr. Schwartz recommends treating leg veins or facial veins several months before a big event or the warm summer months when you may want to be out in the sun, wearing shorts, swimsuits, and sundresses for several reasons:

Varicose Vein Treatment

  • Many insurance providers require a period of conservative treatment
  • Bruising and leg swelling will occur following surgery and will improve within two weeks
  • May experience pain for up to two weeks
  • Compression stockings must be worn for three weeks post-procedure
  • Hot tubs and hot baths must be avoided for two weeks
  • Vigorous activity must be avoided for two weeks
  • Direct sun exposure to the treated legs (face) should be avoided two weeks, as to avoid stimulating the melanin (skin pigment) to minimize undesirable skin discoloration that may occur in the treated areas

Spider Vein Treatment

  • Several sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, are often required
  • Spider veins will look worse before they look better, with treated veins often appearing darker, fading within 4-6 weeks
  • Compression stockings must be worn after each round of sclerotherapy
  • Sun exposure should be avoided for at least two weeks to minimize the risk of hyperpigmentation (dark discoloration in the treated areas).

Compared to surgical stripping surgeries of earlier years, modern vein treatment is extremely well tolerated.  Although each patient’s recovery is different, it’s important to think ahead and consider your travel schedule, social calendar and desire to fully enjoy the summer months without worrying about wearing compression stockings or avoiding the sun while you heal!
