When your visible veins become bulging and twisted, you may be diagnosed with varicose veins, which result from underlying vein disease deep within your venous system. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in color and are often painful and uncomfortable, leaving you with heavy or achy feelings in your legs, itching around your veins, and/or muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs.

The good news is that varicose veins can easily be treated in the comfort and convenience of our office without general anesthesia or long periods of recovery. The vein treatments that we provide at Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz can relieve your discomfort and restore your confidence. Keep reading to learn how long you can expect the results to last.

Vein Treatment Options

After a prescribed period of conservative treatment, as often required by many insurance companies, during which time the patient wears medical-grade compression hose, along with frequent elevation of the legs, Dr. Craig Schwartz will perform an in-office endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) on the underlying diseased vein. This laser treatment uses heat to “close” the diseased vein, and the blood is then re-routed through healthier veins, eliminating the cause of the bulging, painful varicose veins.

Additionally, Dr. Schwartz may also use the micro-phlebectomy procedure to remove the visible superficial bulging veins, or ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy to treat any diseased tributary branches that are just below the skin’s surface and not visible to the naked eye.

Although permanent closure rates hover around 98 % or higher over 5 years, there is always a small chance that new varicose veins may develop.  Since this recurrence rate is so low, however, it is much more likely that the patient is experiencing “disease progression” – whereby veins that were properly working at the time of prior treatment subsequently became varicose, requiring additional treatment.

It is important to note that varicose veins that were not properly diagnosed or treated at the onset may eventually reappear, making it absolutely necessary that varicose vein patients see a vascular surgeon who is trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating the disease of the vascular system.  For example, many physicians or med spas will not conduct thorough diagnostic ultrasound testing to review the deep venous system and will only treat the visible varicose veins with topical sclerotherapy or laser treatment. These so-called “vein specialists” do not offer the complete diagnostic testing nor the endovenous laser ablation treatment needed to diagnose and treat the deeper diseased veins, which are the cause of the visible bulging varicose veins. Without treating the source of the diseased veins, the visible superficial ones will eventually return.

Trusting your vein care to a vascular surgeon, truly trained and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of vein disease, will greatly improve the likelihood that new varicose veins will not reappear in the treated leg.  Although heredity, subsequent pregnancies and hormonal changes are often the greatest indicators of whether or not someone will develop future varicose veins, maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise, leg elevation, an ideal body weight, and use of compression stockings, particularly for those who sit or stand for long periods of time, will also reduce your risk for future developments.

Benefits of Vein Treatment

Varicose veins can take a toll on your overall quality of life. Along with the obvious cosmetic concerns experienced by many varicose vein patients of not being able to wear shorts/skirts/etc., the associated pain and discomfort they may experience can really take a toll on the quality of life. Many of our treated patients report that, along with a renewed confidence in wearing clothes that allow their legs to be visible, they sleep better, and their legs also feel “lighter” and healthier than they’ve felt in years, and most wish they had sought vein treatment sooner!
