A double chin, also known as submental fat, occurs when a layer of fat or additional skin forms beneath the chin. Getting rid of a double chin is difficult, if not impossible through diet and exercise. Though it can be caused by weight gain, some people of normal weight have a double chin due to genetics or aging skin.

There are several options for double chin treatment but first you must decide: surgical or non-surgical? There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods.

Surgical

Tickle Lipo (link to Tickle Lipo page), which is a less invasive type of liposuction, is very effective at reducing unwanted fat in the chin area with just one treatment.  It can be performed right in the comfort and convenience of our medical practice using just local anesthesia, and involves only minimal discomfort and downtime. However, it is still considered a minimally invasive surgical procedure.  The benefits of using Tickle Lipo to remove unwanted double chin fat include: more precise results, with some results immediately noticeable, and the benefit of having to undergo just one procedure.

Non-Surgical

SculpSure® is an FDA-approved, non-surgical laser body contouring device that helps reduce stubborn fat in diet and exercise-resistant areas, such as the chin. This procedure utilizes controlled, light-based (laser) technology to precisely target and break up stubborn fat cells under the skin. The fat cells are ‘shocked,’ causing them to decay over the course of the next few weeks.

CoolSculpting® is an in-office body contouring procedure to treat extra fat on the body. Using the Cool Mini applicator, CoolSculpting combines the science of cryolipolysis with advanced proprietary engineering, to “freeze fat.” Its advanced cooling technology selectively targets fat and aids the body’s ability to metabolize fat cells gently and gradually, while sparing all surrounding tissue.

Both SculpSure and CoolSculpting are completely non-invasive and offer long-term results. However, two treatments are typically needed to reduce submental fat in the chin, and the results may not be as precise as those gained through Tickle Lipo. Also, results are not noticeable until 8-12 weeks after each treatment.

Kybella is a proprietary injection to reduce fat in the area of the double chin. They work by dissolving the fat cells’ membrane to effectively kill the cells, which are then disposed of through the body’s lymphatic system. Each treatment session typically takes between 15-20 minutes to perform, although up to 6 sessions may be needed for the desired outcome, and each session will involve anywhere from 20-40 different, individual injection sites. Kybella treatments are expensive, take longer to show efficacy and can be quite uncomfortable, with a significant amount of swelling and discomfort after each of the treatments typically required for desired results. They also require ongoing maintenance to maintain results. This is not an ideal treatment for patients with anxiety around injections/needles.

The procedure right for you depends on your goals and how much fat and extra skin you have in the chin area.
