When Will I See Sclerotherapy Results?

Spider veins and varicose veins have many causes, but if you have them, you probably want to get rid of them. Dr. Craig Schwartz at Premier Vein & Body will assess your problem veins, determine their underlying causes, and develop a treatment plan to address them. In many cases, this treatment plan includes sclerotherapy. Often considered the gold standard for treating many spider veins, this quick, non-surgical procedure provides long-lasting results.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the gold-standard treatment to eliminate spider veins, leaving you with smoother, clearer skin. In some cases, it may be used as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan to treat problems with circulation in the deep leg veins. Both types of problem veins are caused by venous pressure that causes vein walls to stretch, leading to a bulging, discolored appearance.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Dr. Schwartz performs sclerotherapy by using a tiny needle to inject a small amount of an irritant solution into the problem vein. This irritant causes damage to the inner lining of the vein, causing it to collapse and close off. You will not need any numbing but may feel some tingling or other sensations as the sclerosing agent is injected, a process that usually takes between 20-40 minutes, depending on if it’s your first treatment. Blood discontinues flowing through the treated veins and reroutes through healthier vessels, with the treated veins naturally being eliminated over the course of several weeks post-treatment.

What is Recovery Like After Sclerotherapy?

You can return to your daily activities immediately after sclerotherapy. While you will not need to take time off from work, you should avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for at least 24 hours. You will have a compression garment to wear if you have leg veins treated. Walking regularly and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing will promote healthy circulation. Avoid sun exposure to the treated area and use sunscreen for several weeks after treatment.

When Will I See Sclerotherapy Results?

Your treated veins will often look worse before they begin to look better as the vein responds to treatment. Your body will filter away the pigments from the treated vein naturally. This process takes time, and many factors affect how fast your spider veins fade, including the size, number, and location. Most people will need three to five sessions to achieve complete removal.  Most people will achieve significant improvements in four to six weeks, although some pigmentation may remain for longer.

In the event that some of the spider veins are too tiny for the sclerotherapy needle to accurately access them, Dr. Schwartz also utilizes topical laser treatment to heat and close them, similar to with sclerotherapy.

Am I a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

Dr. Schwartz will assess your vein health and medical history before considering the best treatment plan for you. Good candidates for sclerotherapy have spider veins that they want to eliminate.

People with certain medical conditions, including those affecting the blood vessels or circulatory system, may not be good candidates for sclerotherapy. You should not have this treatment if you are pregnant or unable to walk regularly throughout the day. If sclerotherapy is not a good option for you, other treatments are available.

Will Spider Veins Come Back After Sclerotherapy?

When treated with sclerotherapy, your spider veins will collapse and be entirely removed by your lymphatic system. They will never come back, making sclerotherapy results extremely long-lasting. However, other veins in the area can transform into new spider veins if the same risk factors remain. Good ways to prevent varicose veins and spider veins include:

  • Walk regularly and avoid long periods of sitting or standing
  • Engage in regular physical activity that keeps your circulatory system healthy
  • If you are overweight, talk to your primary care provider about weight management plans
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure on areas prone to spider veins
  • Stop smoking or using tobacco products
