What Is “Tech Neck” and How to Treat It?

If you spend a lot of time with your head tilted downward to look at a phone or tablet, you (like many of us) are at risk of “tech neck.” This problem has become increasingly common, even in younger individuals who spend a lot of time on their devices. At Premier Vein & Body, we offer two powerful treatments to restore your tighter, more sculpted neck.

What is “Tech Neck?”

Spending hours a day looking down at a device in our hands is unique to this technological era, and it has affected our health and appearance in many ways. Because your neck skill is thinner and more delicate than almost anywhere else, having your head in this position regularly can cause horizontal creases across your neck and other signs of stress on the skin.

Despite the name “tech neck,” this problem can also affect people who spend a lot of time doing hobbies or activities that put the neck in a similar position. In addition, people with these horizontal lines often have other concerns with issues like skin laxity in the neck area.

What are the Best Treatments for “Tech Neck?”

If you have a “tech neck,” you have several treatment options. While surgery is an option for severe skin laxity, most people with issues related to neck lines and skin laxity achieve their desired results with non-surgical, minimal-downtime treatments.

Tixel®

This treatment allows your skin expert to target your goals with precision. Tixel® is a micro-fractional treatment that uses tiny titanium pyramids that make brief contact with the skin, transferring heat that increases collagen production. Because it only affects the outermost layers of the skin and uses no laser energy, it works more gently and has less downtime. New collagen firms your skin and smooths away lines and wrinkles.

Opus Plasma™

As the first treatment that uses unique plasma energy to rejuvenate and tighten your skin, Opus Plasma™ uses radiofrequency energy to excite the tips of tiny metal pins that never touch your skin. Instead, plasma energy crosses the gap between the pins and your skin to create precisely controlled areas of damage. This highly customizable treatment can address minor to moderate skin laxity and smooth away neck lines.

Is There Any Downtime After “Tech Neck” Treatment?

Both Tixel® and Opus Plasma™ are minimally invasive treatments that take very little time out of your schedule. Most people will need around three sessions to see their best results. Your skin will look red and feel sensitive after treatment, and depending on the intensity, this can last from a few hours to a few days. Intensive Opus Plasma™ treatments can cause minor peeling for a day or two.

While you can usually return to your normal activities right away, you should use care in which products you apply to your skin for the first few days. Sticking to gentle, fragrance-free products will minimize the risk of irritation.

What Results Will I See After “Tech Neck” Treatment?

You may notice improvements in your neck skin within a few weeks of your first treatment. However, full results continue to develop for three months or more after your last session as your skin adds new collagen. You will notice neck tightening that corrects skin laxity and erases those “tech neck” creases.

To maintain your results, we recommend using sun protection on your neck, not just your face. We also recommend medical-grade skincare products to boost your collagen formation and tighten your skin even more. You can also make changes to your habits and posture to prevent “tech neck” from making a reappearance.

Most patients require a series of three of either treatment for optimal cosmetic results, which can last for up to several years with proper maintenance, including the use of sun protection and taking consistent care of your neck skin. Most people can keep their smoother, more shapely necks with a maintenance treatment once a year.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neck Tightening Treatment?

One of the biggest advantages of these neck tightening treatments is that they do not use laser energy, which makes them safe for all skin tones. Almost anyone can be a good candidate for Opus Plasma™ or Tixel®, but they are most effective for mild to moderate loose skin and neck lines.

A consultation will help us determine the best options for you and what results you may see. These treatments should not be used on broken or irritated skin. People with certain medical or skin conditions may not be good candidates. These treatments are also not recommended if you are pregnant.
