What Causes Hyperhidrosis and How Can I Treat It?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating not related to exercise or hot weather. The excessive sweating associated with hyperhidrosis is normally most active in the hands, feet, armpits, and the groin because of their relatively high concentration of sweat glands. If you have been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, keep reading to find out its causes and what you can do to treat it.

Causes of Hyperhidrosis

Although Hyperhidrosis may be present from birth, most cases of excessive sweating tend to start during a person’s teenage years. The condition can be due to an underlying health condition, or have no apparent cause:

  • Primary idiopathic hyperhidrosis: “Idiopathic” means “of unknown cause.” Primary focal hyperhidrosis is “localized” and is the most common type of hyperhidrosis and usually worsens with stress. It can affect your soles and palms and even your face. Although there is no known cause for primary focal hyperhidrosis, it may be genetic.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis: Secondary hyperhidrosis arises when you sweat excessively as a result of a medical condition. It can cause you to sweat in all areas of your body and may be caused by conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems, heart attack, low blood sugar, infections, and nervous system disorders.

According to the International Hyperhidrosis Association, approximately 2.8 percent of Americans are affected by hyperhidrosis; that’s around 7.8 million people. For some, hyperhidrosis symptoms are so severe that it becomes embarrassing, causing discomfort and anxiety, and the diagnosis can affect career choices, free time activities, personal relationships, self-image, and emotional well-being may be affected. There are several treatment options that can provide some temporary symptomatic relief, such as Botox injections, but only one treatment that provides long-lasting results, specifically, for excessive underarm sweat.

MiraDry Can Treat Hyperhidrosis of the Underarm

Over the years, symptoms of hyperhidrosis of the underarm have often been treated with temporary solutions, such as prescription antiperspirant or nerve-blocking drugs, or more radical procedures, such as sweat gland removal. However, the non-invasive miraDry procedure was cleared by the U.S. FDA in 2011 and CE-marked in Europe to treat axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive underarm sweating and is now available in more than 50 countries worldwide.

MiraDry was also FDA-cleared in 2015 to permanently eliminate underarm hair of all colors as well as odor glands (which are just a different kind of sweat gland); making it the first FDA-cleared device available to permanently halt unwanted underarm sweat and hair growth while also eliminating odor-producing glands. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy in 2013 showed that miraDry was effective in treating both axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis and axillary osmidrosis (foul-smelling sweat). miraDry is unrivaled in its ability to treat hyperhidrosis with permanent results that you will experience immediately! It’s the only FDA-cleared treatment that can significantly reduce underarm sweat and odor in one in-office appointment (although some patients who suffer from severe hyperhidrosis do require a second follow-up treatment, which occurs in less than 10-15% of patients). After administering local anesthesia, we’ll use the cutting-edge miraDry device to deliver precisely controlled energy to the areas where your underarm sweat glands are found, permanently eliminating them.

The best part of miraDry is the immediate results it offers. You’ll instantly notice a drastic improvement in sweating and feel more confident in your personal and professional life. Although you may face some mild side effects like swelling, nodularity and bruising, they will disappear shortly after treatment.

Good Candidates for MiraDry

If you are self-conscious about your underarm sweat, avoid social or work opportunities because you are worried about sweating in front of others, have had to throw away or excessively dry clean clothing because of sweat stains, are concerned about the long term health effects of antiperspirant chemicals or just wish sticky, stinky underarm sweat was something you don’t have to be bothered by, miraDry might be a great fit for you! Also, if you have ever found yourself doing any of the following, please visit us for a miraDry consultation to see if the treatment is right for you!
