How to Tighten Loose Skin After Weight Loss

With so many people achieving significant weight loss with effective new medications, the problem of how to treat the resulting loose skin has become an even more talked about issue. While some people lose massive amounts of weight and need surgical loose skin removal, many people can benefit from noninvasive or minimally invasive skin tightening treatments to see restored firmness and smoothness.

How to Tighten Loose Skin After Weight Loss

The best way to address your loose skin will differ between individuals. A consultation with our triple-board certified surgeon, Dr. Craig Schwartz, is the first step in assessing your concerns and recommending a treatment plan treatment based on your unique factors, including:

  • How much weight you have lost
  • Your skin’s elasticity, which is typically related to your age
  • Your goals and expectations

While surgery is an option after losing a very large amount of weight, many people do not need that extreme of a procedure,  and many more are not interested in the costs, risks and recovery time that comes with surgery. Your Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz team offers several non-invasive to less invasive treatments and procedures to deliver skin tightening results.

Renuvion®, Tixel®, Opus Plasma™, Sculpt™

Best Skin Tightening Treatments After Weight Loss

The most effective way to tighten your skin without surgery is to restore and strengthen your skin’s natural supports. If you have loose skin after weight loss, Dr. Schwartz may recommend one or more of these options.

Renuvion®

This minimally invasive treatment uses cold plasma, an advanced technology that creates plasma by energizing helium gas with radiofrequency energy at a low temperature. Renuvion® delivers this plasma energy from beneath the skin, so it acts on the deep layers of skin and the collagen fibers within it.

Renuvion® immediately tightens the skin by causing collagen fibers to contract. It also provides more firmness and lift over time as your skin produces more collagen. Because it works on the deepest layers, it is one of the most effective ways to tighten skin without surgery. This procedure can be performed alone or directly after liposuction for optimal cosmetic results.

Tixel®

This form of micro-fractional skin tightening works using tiny titanium cones that transfer energy to the skin for a fraction of a second. Tixel® works on the outer layers of the skin, making it so gentle that some people do not even need numbing cream. Despite its gentleness, it stimulates collagen formation as well as smoothing and rejuvenating your skin.

Opus Plasma™

This innovative treatment uses radiofrequency energy, which is safe for all skin tones. Opus Plasma™ uses tiny pins, but unlike microneedling, they do not enter the skin. Instead, they energize the air between the tips of the pins and the skin, creating areas of precisely controlled micro-damage that result in collagen development.

Sculpt™

If you are looking for a non-invasive, painless treatment for loose skin after weight loss, Sculpt™ may be recommended for you. It uses a wavelength of 2.45 Gigahertz, which falls into the range of microwave energy. As a result, it treats the deep layers of the skin without affecting the outer ones, making it a comfortable way to stimulate collagen formation and tighten sagging skin.

Sculpt™ is also an effective treatment for cellulite, so individuals who struggle with this concern can often enjoy dramatic reductions in dimples and bulges.  Unlike Renuvion skin tightening, which is minimally-invasive and a “one and done” in each treated area, multiple Sculpt treatments are necessary for good results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Loose Skin Tightening?

With so many options available, almost anyone can benefit from treatments to tighten their loose skin after losing weight. Ideal candidates have realistic expectations and no health problems that would affect treatment. These treatments are most effective for mild to moderate loose skin, and those with severe sagging may require surgery to achieve their desired results.

In general, you should not have skin tightening treatments on broken, injured, or irritated skin. Treatment is not recommended if you are pregnant, and some treatments may not be right for people who tend to form keloid scars. Only a consultation can tell you which treatment may work best for you.

Is There Any Downtime After Skin Tightening Treatments?

We have chosen our loose skin treatments to address your needs effectively while disrupting your life as little as possible. As a result, these treatment options have little to no downtime. Renuvion® usually allows people to return to work within a few days and their exercise routine within a week. The most common effects after other treatments include a day or two of minor redness and sensitivity.

What Results Will I See With Loose Skin Tightening Treatments?

Because these treatments trigger new collagen development, their full results can take up to three or four months to develop. You will notice natural-looking results that develop gradually and result in a firmer, tighter appearance without scars or recovery time. Results will fade gradually, so many people have a maintenance session every year or so to keep their skin smooth.
