How Long to Wear Compression Stockings After Sclerotherapy?

Many people love warm weather and the chance to wear shorts and other leg-baring attire. If you have spider veins, though, you may not feel comfortable letting others see them. While spider veins are extremely common, they can affect your confidence and may even be a sign of deeper concerns. Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective ways to eliminate spider veins and let you feel free to show off your smooth legs.

What is Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, damaged veins that appear under the skin, often on areas like the legs or face. They begin as ordinary veins but become stretched over time, often due to a dysfunction in the larger leg veins. Dr. Craig Schwartz specializes in treating both visible spider veins and the underlying issues to restore healthy circulation. Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment that closes off treated veins to eliminate their appearance over time.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy offers a minimally invasive way to get rid of spider veins. During your session, Dr. Schwartz injects a compound called a sclerosant. This chemical works by damaging the insides of the treated vein, causing it to collapse. Your body removes the treated veins over time, with blood flow naturally rerouting through the area.

In many cases, spider veins are caused by deeper veins that have lost their ability to carry blood flow normally. Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy uses ultrasound scanning to target and collapse veins beneath the skin. Leg vein problems are often complex and require several types of treatment to resolve the issue fully. Dr. Schwartz may recommend laser treatments or other methods to help you achieve your best results.

How Long to Wear Compression Stockings After Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is often considered the “gold standard” for treating spider veins on the legs. To make this treatment effective, you will need to follow a few steps after treatment.

After sclerotherapy, you can return to your daily routine, although you should avoid strenuous exercise for the next 24 hours. You will need to wear a medical-grade compression stocking after treatment to help collapse the treated vein so the body can eliminate it. How long you will need to wear this stocking depends on many factors, but you can generally expect to wear them for approximately five days (24 hours the first day, then during the daytime only after that). It’s important that patients only wear the medical-grade compression stockings we provide in-office since store-bought ones will not have the appropriate level or type of compression.

While the compression stocking is a key part of making your spider veins disappear, we also recommend regular walking and avoiding long periods of sitting or standing. Walking will improve circulation and help your body remove the treated vein more quickly. Dr. Schwartz and his team may provide you with other post-treatment instructions, and you should follow them carefully for the best results.

How Long Does it Take to See Results After Sclerotherapy?

Many people notice that their treated veins start to look more discolored and noticeable before they fade. This process is normal, and you should start to see improvements after a few weeks. While many factors affect how many sessions you will need, an average of four to six sessions will provide most people with the improvements they want to see.

Most people need at least four to six weeks to enjoy their final results. However, some pigments may take longer to remove. Dr. Schwartz will monitor your progress and adjust your treatment as needed to ensure you achieve your desired results and feel more confident about your legs.

Am I a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

Because sclerotherapy is a very safe and widely used method for treating spider veins, almost anyone may be a good candidate. This treatment may be recommended alone but is often used in combination with other methods. Candidates should have realistic expectations and understand the timeline of the treatment process.

You should not have sclerotherapy if you have certain bleeding or clotting conditions, other medical conditions, or are pregnant. Only a consultation can determine the extent of your leg vein problems and the best course of treatment to resolve them. We develop a unique treatment plan for each individual.

Do Spider Veins Come Back After Treatment?

Once your spider veins have been treated with sclerotherapy, your body will remove them, and they will not come back. If they formed as a result of venous insufficiency in the bigger veins of your legs, treating the underlying condition should prevent recurrence. However, you can develop new spider veins, especially if you have a genetic predisposition to them in combination with other factors such as pregnancy, hormonal changes, and long periods of sitting or standing.
