How Long Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take?

Your unwanted tattoo no longer has to be a lifetime commitment. Laser tattoo removal can restore your clear, ink-free skin. While tattoo removal does not happen overnight, with a bit of patience, you can see your tattoo disappear. This treatment works in several sessions to break up ink particles and eliminate them from the body. At Premier Vein & Body, we offer the fastest, most complete tattoo removal so you can spend less time thinking about unwelcome ink.

What is Laser Tattoo Removal?

Have you ever wondered how tattoo ink stays in your skin? Particles of tattoo ink are placed deep in the dermis, a layer of skin that is never shed, so they stay in place. Your body’s white blood cells attempt to remove the ink particles, but they are too large, so they cannot be budged. Laser tattoo removal works by breaking up these particles into smaller pieces that your body can clear away.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser tattoo removal works because ink particles absorb the wavelengths of laser energy. With older, less efficient lasers, some pigments were much easier to treat than others, and bright colors often resisted all efforts. The FDA-cleared PicoSure® laser, a medical laser that uses three different laser wavelengths, can target more colors on ALL skin types. Even pigments that were not removed by other lasers can usually be removed with the PicoSure® laser.

How Long Does Laser Tattoo Removal Take?

Because each tattoo is unique, your tattoo removal will take more or less time, depending on many factors. In general, you can expect to see 20% to 25% removal with each session, but this will vary widely.

The Size of Your Tattoo

Larger tattoos may require more treatments, especially if they are too large for the entire tattoo to be treated in one sitting. However, some large tattoos can be removed very quickly, so other factors play a major role.

The Style of Your Tattoo

A tattoo done in intense colors often has a heavy application of ink that can require more sessions to get rid of. Intense, bright colors can be removed with the PicoSure® laser, but it may take longer than a less-pigmented tattoo.

The Colors in Your Tattoo

With three wavelengths, PicoSure® can target every color in your tattoo. However, some colors require more treatments to break up and remove, even for this advanced laser. Your Premier Vein & Body laser expert will discuss which colors you can expect to take the longest.

The Age of Your Tattoo

If you have had your tattoo for years, you may have noticed that the colors become less vibrant. Over time, some pigments in your tattoo move toward the surface and are shed with outer layers of skin. Since older tattoos are often closer to the surface, they are usually easier to remove.

The Way Your Tattoo Was Done

Was your tattoo done by an amateur or a professional? If a professional performs the tattoo with proper equipment, it will take longer to remove than an amateur tattoo, which is usually not as deep in the skin. However, amateur tattoos can be more difficult to predict.

Is There Any Downtime After Laser Tattoo Removal?

You will receive a post-treatment care kit and instructions on how to care for the treated area, which will usually look red and swollen after treatment. Crusting or blistering begins after 24 to 48 hours and will last about five days. Using cold compresses followed by your aftercare treatments will help your skin heal quickly.

You can resume your usual activities after your laser tattoo removal session but avoid exposing your skin to irritants. Apply sunscreen and avoid sun exposure as much as possible between treatment sessions since laser treatments make skin extremely sensitive to UV damage.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Tattoo Removal?

If you want to get rid of a tattoo, the PicoSure® laser can most likely help you do it. All tattoos can be removed or significantly faded. Good candidates for this treatment have reasonable expectations and understand the potential risks and benefits. You should not have treatment if you have an active skin condition or infection in the treatment area. People with certain medical conditions may not be good candidates.

Unlike almost all other tattoo removal lasers, PicoSure® can be used safely on all skin tones, making tattoo removal available to individuals high on the Fitzpatrick scale. People with darker skin tones are at increased risk of pigmentation changes after laser treatment. They should use care when selecting a provider and only choose one, like Premier Vein & Body, which has extensive experience in the widest range of tattoos and skin tones.
