End of Year Vein Treatment!

Met your deductible?

Start Vein Treatment Now!

Considered cosmetic in nature by many, patients often ignore symptoms of vein disease that seem minor, such as persistent aches, bulging veins, twinges of pain, a few spider veins here and there, or just frequent leg fatigue. However, these symptoms are often early red flags of potentially serious complications to come if nothing is done to stop the progression of venous disease.

An ideal time for Vein Treatment

Because we want people to avoid bigger problems down the road, we tell our patients that “any time” is a great time to start vein treatment, although we realize that some periods of the year are more ideal depending on a patient’s preferences and circumstances. Although winter has always been a popular time for vein treatment, we have noticed that in recent years, due to continued rising insurance deductibles, the end of year is now our busiest season for vein treatment. This means that insurance may completely cover varicose vein treatment if deemed medically necessary!

Many patients call during December asking to be “squeezed in” by the end of the month, before their deducible renews. However, to ensure we can meet this insurance deadline, Fall is the best time to see us for a free vein screening, as insurance providers require a period of “conservative vein treatment” – aka “compression stockings” – before they will approve laser treatment for varicose veins! Beginning vein treatment in the fall has an added benefit, too, since the compression stockings add a thin layer of warmth, which is better tolerated as the temperatures dip.

Once the patient has completed their period of conservative treatment during the fall, they will be ready for the actual medical procedures in November or December, which is when most have met their deductible. It is important to note that this period of required “conservative treatment” may be shortened if the patient has already been wearing the compression hosiery. After a very short recovery period, the patient will be ready to enjoy the holidays!

Free Vein Screening

Dr. Craig Schwartz has been diagnosing and treating vein disease in Kansas City since 2003 and was one of the original dedicated vein centers in our area (then known as Vein Centers for Excellence of Kansas City)! Because he understands that symptoms can be confusing and not all are the result of venous reflux (the underlying disease that causes varicose veins), he offers free vein screenings where you will receive a visual exam and discuss your symptoms and history with Dr. Schwartz. If the patient presents with symptoms of venous reflux, a diagnostic ultrasound, which is billed to insurance, is required to detect any signs of venous reflux, which is what causes vein disease/varicose veins. If treatment is advisable, Dr. Schwartz, a triple board-certified vascular surgeon, carefully recommends a customized treatment plan based on the progression of your vein disease. Our staff is experienced in working with your insurance provider to determine your coverage and any out-of-pocket costs in the case that you have not yet met your deductible.

* Initial free vein screening will include a visual evaluation and subsequent discussion with Dr. Schwartz. However, if patient presents with symptoms of more significant underlying vein disease (not just spider veins), a diagnostic test, such as a venous ultrasound/duplex examination, that is considered medically necessary per the physician’s determination, will be required and will be billed as a separate charge, and $450 will be billed to your insurance provider. Pending your carrier’s response, you may be ultimately responsible for some portion or ALL of this charge, which may include deductibles, co-insurance and/or co-pays. If your insurance company denies this charge, your patient responsibility portion may be partially discounted if you proceed with vein disease treatment through our office.
