Does Tattoo Removal Hurt?

Tattoos are uncomfortable – both while you’re getting them and if you decide to have them removed. Studies say that up to a third of people who have a tattoo end up regretting it, but removal can be costly and painful. Traditional tattoo removal has been described as feeling like your skin is being snapped by a rubber band or hit with specks of hot grease. Many people say the pain intensifies as the treatment goes on and can continue for days after the session. Traditional tattoo removal also requires multiple sessions, sometimes up to ten.

Pain is usually one of the most common pre-treatment concerns among tattoo removal patients, but laser tattoo removal does not have to involve significant pain. Fortunately, the PicoSure laser, used at Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz to provide laser tattoo removal in Kansas City, is found to have less discomfort and pain than other tattoo removal systems. It’s also faster and requires fewer treatments, usually 4-6 sessions. To ease the discomfort of our tattoo removal treatments, we pre-treat the area with a numbing cream 25 minutes prior to treatment, which helps to desensitize the discomfort of the laser heat. We also use an air chiller device throughout the entire laser tattoo removal process, which cools the patient’s skin during the laser treatment, reducing pain and discomfort during the laser treatment. Local tumescent anesthesia is also available at an additional charge, which is an option only available in Kansas City at Premier Vein & Body. Licodaine is injected under the tattoo into the dermis layer of the skin 10 minutes prior to treatment, which significantly minimizes the discomfort of the laser.

PicoSure® Tattoo Removal is the first FDA-cleared medical laser that utilizes PressureWave technology to shatter ink into particles that are 100 times smaller than the majority of tattoo removal lasers. The ink is then eliminated, resulting in clearer skin in fewer treatments, without damaging the surrounding skin.

To ease discomfort during your tattoo removal treatments, we offer two types of anesthesia:

1) Topical anesthesia is the standard used for tattoo removal- this numbing cream is applied to the surface of the tattoo 25 minutes prior to treatment and helps to desensitize the discomfort of the laser.

With PicoSure, there’s no special prep and procedures typically take about 10-15 minutes, compared to lengthy treatment sessions of other tattoo removal procedures. Most people experience very minimal pain and your treatment provider may offer numbing cream to minimize any possible discomfort.

After treatment, most patients experience only 1-3 hours of minor swelling and redness. Because PicoSure doesn’t burn and damage the surface of the skin, make-up, moisturizes and sunscreens may be applied immediately following treatment.
