Do Varicose Veins Reappear After Treatment?

Varicose veins are a medical condition that can leave you with uncomfortable symptoms such as heaviness and achiness, itching, and/or muscle cramping. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with varicose veins. How are Varicose Veins Treated?

There are several treatments available for varicose veins. Upon completion of your Venous Duplex Ultrasound, Dr. Schwartz will determine your recommended treatment protocol, which will involve one or a combination of the following procedures:

Conservative Vein Treatment

Some patients achieve adequate relief with conservative therapy. However, although leg elevation and the use of compression stockings may provide symptomatic relief, they will not, ultimately, resolve the problem. As many insurance companies require a trial of compression stockings for six to twelve weeks prior to approval for a more extensive procedure to treat the underlying causes of the vein disease, a period of conservative treatment using compression stockings will, often, be the first step in your treatment protocol.

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

During EVLA, a thin laser fiber (about five human hairs wide) is inserted through the diseased vein via a tiny needle, involving no incision, and thermal energy is delivered to the diseased vein, effectively sealing, or “closing” the unhealthy vein. The blood is then re-routed through healthier veins, thus restoring normal blood circulation. The Sciton Pro-V laser system is, by far, one of the most comfortable laser vein treatments available, providing our vein patients with rapid relief of symptoms with little to no downtime, less bruising than traditional laser treatments, and minimal, if any, scarring.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory Phlebectomy, Micro-phlebectomy, or “hook” phlebectomy, is a micro-extraction procedure used to remove the visible bulging varicose veins, both large and small, that are close to the surface through very small (1/16 – 1/8 inch) micro-incisions. The micro-incisions are so small that they seldom require a stitch and once healed are rarely visible.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy

In addition to treating the underlying diseased veins via Endovenous Laser Ablation, and the visible, superficial bulging veins via Ambulatory Phlebectomy, Dr. Schwartz often needs to treat varicose veins, or tributary branches, that are just below the skin’s surface and not visible to the eye, using Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. Using an ultrasound to guide him, Dr. Schwartz injects an FDA-approved medication into these diseased veins, which creates inflammation within the lining of the vein, causing it to seal itself shut, which the body than reabsorbs over time.

Once your vein disease is properly diagnosed via Venous Duplex Ultrasound and the source of the varicose veins treated (via EVLA), your varicose veins should not return. However, we do often see patients who were not properly diagnosed or treated and subsequently developed new varicose veins.
