Craig Schwartz, DO, FACOS, FICS, RPVI, RVT, is the medical director of Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz, one of Kansas City’s original outpatient laser centers specializing in minimally-invasive vein treatment, liposuction, body contouring, fat transfer, facial rejuvenation, tattoo removal, and underarm sweat treatment.
Known affectionately as “KC’s Vein Guy,” Dr. Craig Schwartz has performed more than 12,000 vein procedures. As one of the Midwest’s most prominent and accomplished vein specialists, Dr. Schwartz has been voted to America’s Top Surgeons in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018; chosen as Kansas City Super Doctor in 2013, 2014 and 2015; and has most recently been named a Real Self Top Doctor by RealSelf.com. He holds triple board certifications in Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, and Phlebology, and is further certified in Ultrasound as both an RPVI and RVT.
Board-certified in both vascular and general surgery, Dr. Schwartz pursued additional certification in the area of Phlebology (venous disease) at a time when the vein industry was becoming much more accessible to a wide spectrum of physicians, due to the minimally invasive nature of the latest vein procedures.
After many years of dedication to the vascular and vein industries, Dr. Schwartz noticed the need among his patients for office-based cosmetic laser treatments performed by a trusted, well-credentialed surgeon. Never relying on the status quo to care for his patients, Dr. Schwartz sought out the newest, most state-of-the-art methods, devices, and technologies to be able to offer his patients natural-looking, long-lasting cosmetic results without the weeks of downtime and discomfort associated with traditional surgical options. Dr. Schwartz trained with and attended preceptorships with notable aesthetic surgeons, such as Dr. Jeffrey Klein, the original inventor and developer of Tumescent Liposuction, and Dr. Robert Weiss, Dr. Roger Hogue and Dr. David Broadway. This was a natural progression in Dr. Schwartz’s career, as he was already an accomplished and skilled physician in the area of laser surgery in the treatment of vein disease and the use of tumescent anesthesia, and many of the early in-office fat removal and body contouring procedures involved the use of both laser energy performed under tumescent anesthesia.
Dr. Schwartz is an active supporter of many charities, including the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, American Diabetes Association, AHA Go Red for Women, Marillac Mental Health Care for Children, Safe Home, and Women’s Employment Network.
Dr. Schwartz lives in Overland Park with his wife Peggy, his son Trevor and his chocolate lab, “the Unsinkable” Molly Brown. He enjoys golf, travel, scuba diving, water sports, and reading in his free time and is an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan.
With his BS degree from Tufts University in Massachusetts, his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Pennsylvania, and over ten years of experience in vascular and general surgery performing a wide range of procedures, Dr. Schwartz relocated to Kansas City in 2003 with his wife, Peggy – a Kansas City native – and opened one of the Midwest’s first dedicated vein treatment centers – Vein Centers for Excellence of Kansas City.
While most vein treatment at this time involved hospital-based vein stripping procedures, which involved much pain and weeks to months of downtime, a group of vascular surgeons were embracing new treatment modalities that provided the resolution of venous hypertension in the superficial veins of the lower extremities that provided safe and better outcomes with significantly less patient inconvenience and pain than in the past. The new venous ablation procedures, using the newest laser technology, allowed vascular surgeons to diagnose and treat vein patients right in the comfort and convenience of their own offices.
Dr. Schwartz quickly realized the patient benefit of this type of treatment and after training with Dr. Ronald Bush – one of the original leaders in the use of minimally-invasive endovascular laser ablations to treat venous insufficiency – he opened his own dedicated vein treatment center, providing the Kansas City area with its first dedicated vein treatment center directed by a vascular surgeon. These procedures are now considered the industry standard in the treatment of vein disease with years of documented results.
A few years after opening his dedicated vein treatment center, Dr. Schwartz also opened KC Body Contouring to provide patients with the best non-invasive and minimally-invasive fat reduction procedures, including Laser Lipo, CoolSculpting and more. As this portion of the business continued to grow, in 2014 Dr. Schwartz combined his twelve-year-old vein practice, Vein Centers for Excellence of Kansas City, and eight-year-old body contouring and aesthetic practice, KC Body Contouring, into one large medical practice, Premier Vein and Body by Schwartz, reflecting his dedication to both in-office vein and cosmetic laser treatments. Dr. Schwartz is now one of the KC Metro’s most experienced liposuction surgeons, and is a very hands-on Medical Director, on-site every day in his Kansas City office, performing many of the consultations and procedures himself, striving to provide his patients with a truly premier level of care.
