Is SculpSure® or CoolSculpting®
Better for Non-Invasive Fat Reduction?
Over the last five years, CoolSculpting® has grown to be the world’s most popular non-invasive body contouring solution for people wanting to reduce unwanted fat in diet and exercise-resistant areas without the pain and downtime of liposuction. Part of its popularity was due to the fact that it was the first non-surgical fat reduction option to be FDA-approved for fat reduction in the abdomen, flanks and thighs, and has since received approval to treat fat in the double chin area. Until CoolSculpting®, the other non-surgical body contouring options on the market were mediocre, at best. More importantly, almost universally, they only offered a very temporary reduction in fat, so that patients had to continually repeat treatments to maintain the fat reduction results. The meteoritic rise in the popularity of CoolSculpting® can also be partially attributed to the general rise in popularity of non-surgical aesthetic and cosmetic procedures over the past five years, as patients looked for ways to look better with less pain and downtime than in the past.
The CoolSculpting® procedure quickly caught on in Kansas City with no fewer than fifteen centers now offering CoolSculpting® in the area. As Premier Vein & Body by Schwartz was one of the very first medical practices in Kansas City to offer CoolSculpting®, we quickly began treating patients and seeing results. However, the procedure was not without concern for Dr. Craig Schwartz, owner and medical director.
Since early 2016, Premier Vein & Body has been offering an alternative procedure to their body contouring patients – SculpSure® – also FDA-approved to reduce unwanted fat in the abdomen and flanks. There are many similarities between the two non-surgical body contouring procedures, but, also, many differences, and we continue to receive many questions from patients regarding which fat reduction procedure we prefer, as we still offer both CoolSculpting® and SculpSure® at this time.
They do have some similarities:
- Both SculpSure® and CoolSculpting® are FDA approved for the long-term, non-invasive reduction of fat*
- Both are non-invasive body treatments ideal for treating small, localized pockets of diet and exercise-resistant fat*
- Both have minimal downtime*
But this is where the similarities end.
CoolSculpting® relies on “fat freezing” technology to disrupt and kill the fat cells, which are then naturally flushed out by the body over time, while SculpSure® technology is laser-based. It’s actually the first non-invasive body contouring solution to use laser energy to melt fat.
CoolSculpting® entails approximately one hour commitment for each area treated. Symmetric body areas such as the love handles or thighs will thus require approximately two full hours of treatment.
SculpSure® is a revolutionary fat reduction procedure in that the average procedure time measures approximately twenty-five minutes per treatment area – less than half of the time required for CoolSculpting®.
Unlike CoolSculpting’s® single applicator, which can be attached to just one body area at a time, SculpSure® offers four separate applicator heads, which can be customized to meet your fat removal goals. For example, placement of the heads can be adjusted should you want to treat both of your flanks, or perhaps both the upper and lower portions of your stomach. Depending on the volume of fat you desire to reduce from these regions, you can, potentially, treat both sides or both areas in just one short SculpSure® session, whereas CoolSculpting® would require two or more different sessions, at an additional cost. Some offices are offering dual-CoolSculpting® with two machines, but you will still pay additional fees for the extra machine.
The Ouch Factor:
With any invasive or non-invasive medical treatment, factors to consider always include the discomfort involved and recovery time. CoolSculpting®’s pre-treatment prep includes pain medication. CoolSculpting® works by “freezing” fat, so only the tissue that is within the hand piece, that is, between the two cooling plates, is what gets treated, so CoolSculpting® has a tremendous suction component, drawing as much tissue into the hand piece as possible. This intense suction is what leads to the pain, bruising, swelling, numbness and sometimes the nodularity that patients experience. With SculpSure®, there is no suction or pulling of the tissue, enabling a much gentler procedure. The SculpSure® device lays flat on top of the tissue while energy penetrates into the tissue to safely reduce the fat cells.
Ongoing Benefits – Stimulates Collagen and Elastin Production for Skin Tightening:
The laser energy used in SculpSure® provides the added benefit of a skin tightening component.
The energy successfully stimulates both collagen and elastin production to help create smoother and more supple skin. This skin tightening effect can leave the treatment area looking much smoother, more even and more natural. There has been no observed skin tightening benefits after CoolSculpting® treatments.
Although CoolSculpting® has helped many of our patients achieve their fat reduction goals over the last few years, we feel that SculpSure® is a real, proven game changer in the field of cosmetic, non-surgical fat reduction due to its effectiveness, flexibility and exceptionally low levels of discomfort or downtime experienced post-treatment.*
